Men's ethnic wear is easier than it looks. A few well-chosen pieces cover almost every festival and wedding function. This guide walks through the essentials, so you always have something right to wear, whatever the occasion.

The kurta pyjama: your everyday hero

A good kurta pyjama is the backbone of any ethnic wardrobe. In cotton it works for daytime festivals and casual pujas; in silk or a blend it dresses up for evenings. Own one in a neutral like white, beige or light blue, and one in a richer tone for festive days.

The Nehru jacket: instant polish

Layering a Nehru jacket over a plain kurta transforms the look in seconds. It is the single most useful upgrade in men's ethnic wear. A jacket in a deep colour or a subtle print pairs with almost any solid kurta underneath.

The bandhgala: sharp and formal

The bandhgala, or Jodhpuri, is a structured jacket with a closed collar. It sits somewhere between a kurta and a suit, and it is ideal for sangeets, receptions and formal evening functions. A well-fitted bandhgala looks sharp in photos and needs very little extra styling.

The sherwani: for the big occasions

The sherwani is the most formal piece a man can wear, usually saved for weddings, either your own or a very close one. It is heavily worked and worn with a churidar or dhoti. For most guests a bandhgala is enough, but if the invite is grand, a sherwani is the move.

Getting colour and fit right

Stick to a rich, cohesive palette for festive wear, such as deep greens, maroons, navy and gold accents. Above everything, fit matters most. A simple kurta that fits well beats an expensive one that does not. Get the shoulders and length right, and tailor if needed.

Accessories that finish the look

Keep it minimal and intentional. A mojari or juttis for footwear, a pocket square or brooch on a jacket, and a classic watch are usually enough. For weddings, a safa or turban adds a traditional touch when the occasion calls for it.

The short version

Own a great kurta pyjama, add a Nehru jacket for polish, and keep a bandhgala for formal nights. Nail the fit, keep the colours rich and cohesive, and you are set for almost any festival or wedding on the calendar.
