Getting a wedding invite is exciting, until you open your wardrobe and realise every function needs a different look. The trick is to match the outfit to the mood of each event. Here is a simple guide to dressing well as a guest, without overthinking it.

Mehendi: light, bright and comfortable

Mehendi functions are usually in the daytime and full of colour. Reach for a bright anarkali, a sharara set or a light lehenga in yellow, green or orange. Keep the fabric breathable since you will be sitting around a lot. Skip heavy jewellery and let the outfit do the talking.

Haldi: yellows you can move in

Haldi is playful and a little messy, so wear something you will not mind getting a turmeric stain on. A simple cotton or georgette suit in yellow or white works best. Flowers in the hair beat heavy accessories here.

Sangeet: dress to dance

The sangeet is the night to go glamorous. Think a flowing lehenga, an indo-western gown or a sharara with some shimmer. Choose a silhouette you can dance in comfortably, and pick footwear you can stand in for hours.

The main ceremony: your dressiest look

For the wedding itself, go traditional and rich. A silk saree, a heavily worked lehenga or a classic anarkali all work. This is the moment for your best jewellery. Just make sure you are not in white or red, since those are usually reserved for the couple.

Reception: modern and polished

Receptions lean formal and contemporary. A draped saree, a gown or a tailored indo-western outfit all fit the mood. Deeper tones like wine, navy and emerald photograph beautifully under evening lights.

For the men

Men have easy wins here. A kurta pyjama with a Nehru jacket covers most daytime functions. For the sangeet and reception, a bandhgala or a well-fitted suit looks sharp. Match the formality to the event and keep the colours in the same rich family.

One last tip

Comfort is part of looking good. If you cannot walk, sit and dance in an outfit, it will show on your face in every photo. Pick pieces that fit well and feel easy to wear, and you will look great across every function.
