How to Care for Cotton Clothes So They Last Longer

Cotton is comfortable, breathable and perfect for Indian weather, but it can shrink, fade and lose shape if you are not careful. The good news is that caring for cotton is simple once you know the basics. Here is how to keep your cotton clothes looking new for longer.
Wash in cold or lukewarm water
Hot water is the main reason cotton shrinks and colours fade. Wash in cold or lukewarm water instead. It cleans just as well for everyday wear and is much gentler on the fabric and the dye.
Turn clothes inside out
Turning garments inside out before washing protects the outer surface from friction. This keeps prints from cracking and dark colours from fading, and it is a habit worth building for all your clothes, not just cotton.
Separate colours, especially the first few washes
New cotton, particularly in deep colours, tends to bleed. Wash darks, brights and whites separately for the first few washes. A colour catcher sheet in the machine is cheap insurance if you must mix.
Do not overload the machine
Cotton needs room to move so the water and detergent can circulate. Overloading leaves clothes poorly rinsed and creased. Wash in reasonable loads and use a mild detergent rather than a harsh one.
Dry in the shade
Direct sunlight is harsh on colours. Dry cotton in the shade or indoors, and turn coloured clothes inside out on the line. Reshape the garment while it is still damp so it dries close to its original fit.
Iron while slightly damp
Cotton irons best when it is a little damp. If it has dried fully, use a spray of water or the steam setting. A medium to high heat works for most cotton, but check the care label for anything delicate or blended.
Store it right
Fold heavier cotton items rather than hanging them, since hanging can stretch the shoulders over time. Keep everything in a dry, airy space, because damp cupboards invite mustiness and mildew.
The simple summary
Cold wash, inside out, dry in the shade and store folded. Follow those four habits and your cotton clothes will stay soft, keep their colour and last far longer than they otherwise would.
